Pedestrian Safety Threatened by the E-Bike Delivery Boom

By Dan Rose,

There is a meaningful difference between getting clipped by a traditional bicycle rolling at eight miles per hour and being struck by an e-bike traveling at twenty-five. That difference shows up in fracture severity, recovery timelines, and the size of your medical bills. It also shows up in how often these collisions are happening in Queens neighborhoods where foot traffic and delivery routes overlap.

E-bikes now account for a significant share of cyclist fatalities and serious injury collisions across New York City. In 2023, e-bike riders were involved in 23 of 30 cyclist deaths citywide. The following years brought modest improvements in some boroughs, but the fundamental risk remains. These are heavier, faster machines sharing the same lanes and sidewalks with pedestrians who never signed up to dodge motorized vehicles on their walk to the subway.

Why E-Bikes Hit Harder Than You Expect

A standard pedal bicycle weighs somewhere around 20 to 30 pounds. A typical delivery e-bike, loaded with a battery pack and an insulated food bag, can weigh 70 pounds or more. Combine that extra mass with speeds that can reach 25 to 28 miles per hour and you have a collision force that rivals a low-speed car impact.

Pedestrians struck by e-bikes frequently suffer traumatic brain injuries, broken ribs, fractured wrists and collarbones, and spinal trauma. These are not minor scrapes. They are the kinds of injuries that require surgery, extended rehabilitation, and months away from work.

The challenge for victims is that most people still think of these collisions as “bike accidents,” a phrase that minimizes the seriousness and creates a false impression that recovery will be quick and simple.

Where the Danger Zones Are

Certain Queens neighborhoods see a disproportionate number of delivery e-bike collisions. Areas with high restaurant density, heavy foot traffic, and limited protected bike infrastructure create the perfect conditions for these crashes. Jackson Heights, Flushing, Astoria, and Long Island City all rank among the more hazardous corridors.

NYC DOT has responded by designating Priority Bicycle Districts in parts of eastern Queens that historically lacked dedicated cycling infrastructure. The city installed record miles of protected bike lanes in recent years, and the data suggests these lanes reduce injuries for all road users. But infrastructure improvements take time, and in the meantime, collisions keep happening.

  • Intersection Risk: Most delivery e-bike crashes occur at intersections where riders run red lights or fail to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
  • Sidewalk Riding: Despite being illegal in most circumstances, many delivery riders use sidewalks to bypass traffic, putting pedestrians at direct risk.
  • Dooring Hazard: Delivery riders swerving to avoid suddenly opened car doors frequently veer into pedestrian paths.

What Victims Should Know About Compensation

If an e-bike delivery rider hits you, the same insurance gaps that plague standard bike food delivery accidents apply here. Many riders carry no commercial coverage, and the delivery platforms offer limited or no protection for third-party victims. Your recovery path will likely involve a direct personal injury claim against the rider and, where the evidence supports it, a claim against the platform that employed them.

New York’s three-year statute of limitations gives you time, but not as much as you think. Evidence from traffic cameras, app delivery logs, and witness memories degrades quickly. Acting within the first few weeks after the accident gives your attorney the best chance to preserve the proof that makes or breaks these cases.
