Dear Editor,

Since the end of March, I have been standing at various overpass locations along the Long Island Expressway in Fresh Meadows waving American flags to show support for my fellow Americans as the COVID-19 pandemic swept across our area.

I wanted to do something to give people a feeling of hope for the future, since the news every day during the early days of the pandemic was not good at all.

It gave me a great sense of pride to be able to hear all of those horns being honked by motorists, truck drivers, FDNY and NYPD vehicles, and construction vehicles that drove beneath those overpasses.

I actually had tears welling up in my eyes because of the positive responses I was getting.

I hope that during these past 51 days I was waving the flag, I was a messenger of hope for all of you who saw me. It was an honor and a privilege to wave our American flag each of those days.

Our flag represents a nation that is resilient and strong, especially when we are facing adversity. I sincerely hope and pray that all of you will come through this pandemic safely.

I would like to especially acknowledge our frontline workers and the countless volunteers who have helped those homeless, hungry and less fortunate during these trying and stressful of times. We should never ever again take anything in life for granted.

I will be back to wave the flag again on Labor Day, Columbus Day, and Veteran's Day to continue to show support for my fellow Americans and our wonderful country. Sincerely,

John Amato

Fresh Meadows
