Beginning on March 27, I have been standing at different overpasses along the Long Island Expressway in Fresh Meadows waving the American flag to oncoming traffic. The reaction was just wonderful, with many motorists honking their horns or giving me a thumbs up.
I wanted to do something to help buoy the spirits of people as we all continue to deal with this major medical crisis.
I want to take this moment to say thank you to all of the hundreds and hundreds of people who showed support as I waved the Stars and Stripes for these last 19 days.
I would especially like to acknowledge all of those first responders, as well as our wonderful sanitation workers, food delivery drivers, Fed Ex, UPS and postal workers, bus drivers, and the many other essential workers.
I have never been prouder to be a New Yorker and an American. We are all in this together, and together we will all prevail and win the battle. Please stay safe, stay strong, stay healthy and keep faith.
When this storm finally passes and life slowly but surely returns to some semblance of normalcy, never again will any of us ever take anything for granted.
