In an essay accompanying his K-12 education plan, Mayor Pete Buttigieg writes, "we need to honor teachers like soldiers, and pay them like doctors. I will raise salaries for educators. I will create more and better ways to retain diverse talent for our schools. I will make sure schools have the resources they need."
Based on former Mayor Mike Bloomberg's record, if he releases an education plan, it is reasonable to expect the following introduction: "We need to slander teachers in the tabloids. We need to stiff them for years without a contract. I will weaponize the tenure process to drive new teachers out of the profession. I will starve public schools that face the greatest challenges of resources, encourage abusive principals to fire experienced teachers and facilitate privatization of the entire system."
