Akari: Sculpture by Other Means - Ongoing until May 5, 2019 - Akari: Sculpture by Other Means occupies the Museum’s second-floor galleries. It includes several installations that allow visitors to experience ways that Isamu Noguchi’s Akari—a modular ecosystem of lightweight, collapsible paper lanterns—can create and transform space. | Noguchi Museum, 9-01 33rd Road (at Vernon Boulevard), Long Island City

World’s Fair Visible Storage - Ongoing - The 1939-40 World’s Fair was conceived to commemorate the 150th anniversary of George Washington’s inauguration, revitalize New York’s economy, and create a major new park. The 1964-65 Fair coincided both with the 300th anniversary of New York City and the 25th anniversary of the 1939-40 World’s Fair. The Museum owns more than 10,000 objects related to those two iconic expositions. The World’s Fair Visible Storage was inaugurated after the Museum’s renovation in 2013, and features over 900 objects from the larger collection. It provides an opportunity for students, scholars, and the general public to view items formerly off-limits to the public. | Queens Museum, Flushing Meadows Corona Park

Rob Wynne: FLOAT - Ongoing until March 2019 - New York–based artist Rob Wynne (born 1950) works in a variety of mediums, ranging from hand-embroidered paintings and collage to sculpture and digital photography, but at heart he is an alchemist. In recent years he has experimented increasingly with molten glass, using hand-poured and mirrored glass in a series of large-scale installations, several of which are on display. Also featured are his glass texts, in which the artist borrows words or phrases detached from their original contexts in order to generate cryptic or contradictory meanings. The title of Wynne’s gallery activation alludes to the ephemeral nature of images. Featuring sixteen works—seemingly floating within the American Art galleries and placed in direct dialogue with selected works from the collection—the installation invites a creatively disruptive aesthetic experience | Brooklyn Museum, Luce Center for American Art, 5th Floor, 200 Eastern Parkway

Temporary Allegiance: Open Call - Ongoing - Knockdown Center re-launches Philip von Zweck’s project Temporary Allegiance, an ongoing open call for artist-made flags to be featured temporarily on our prominent 40 foot flagpole at the building’s entrance. A flag can bear national or military emblems, mascots, warning signals, or propaganda, among other symbols. In many countries desecration of the national flag is a punishable crime. Patriotic love or rage, fandom, competition, festivity, spirituality, mourning—these are some of the reactions a flag can engender. The term “temporary allegiance” legally refers to the duty of a non-citizen to obey all laws so long as he remains in that country. Implied is the notion of flux, that loyalty and identity can be reconsidered as the flag is hoisted and lowered. Each flag will be on view for two weeks. | Knockdown Center, 52-19 Flushing Ave, Maspeth
