The comedian, radio host, writer, actor and musician Dave Hill is known for his signature matter-of-fact humor. And with his new live show in Astoria, Hill is taking on the late author George Orwell.

Orwell once famously stated that “history is written by the winners,” but not only does Hill disagree, he is also trying to prove Orwell wrong.

In his live show, “You Had To Be There,” Hill explores various points of history, a sort of 2000 year-old man meets Zelig, where the comedian plays up his role in each of them.

His roles include everything from his tenure in bands like the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac, to his essential role in the creation of CBGB’s.

“It’s an incredible feeling to have been right there in the eye of the storm of every culturally significant event throughout history despite many of them taking place before I was born,” said Hill. "I am also grateful for the opportunity doing these shows affords me to get out of the house while still adhering to the terms of my work release program."

Hill’s previous work included Comedy Central’s “@midnight” program and appearances on “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “Inside Amy Schumer,” “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee,” “Comedy Knockout” and “The Jim Gaffigan Show,” among other shows.

In “You Had To Be There,” which will play at comedy venue Q.E.D. Astoria, Hill teams up with producers Jim Biederman (“The Kids in the Hall,” “The Whitest Kids U Know”), Jodi Lennon (“Exit 57,” “At Home with Amy Sedaris”) and Chris Gersbeck (producer of Hill’s weekly podcast, “Dave Hill’s Podcasting Incident”).

“‘You Had To Be There’ recreates the experience of a barfly telling you stories that sound just believable enough, even though they’re clearly works of fiction,” said producer Jim Biederman.

Biederman also sits on the panel while he and Lennon ask Dave questions about his experiences, with answers that often go off on strange, ridiculous tangents.

“You Had To Be There” is in its early, experimental phase as its producers prepare to release recordings of the show as a podcast.

Upcoming shows include Friday, February 1 at 7:30pm; Wednesday, February 6 at 9pm; Wednesday, February 20 at 7:30pm; Wednesday, March 6 at 9pm; Wednesday, March 13 at 9pm; and Wednesday, March 27 at 9pm. Q.E.D. Astoria is located at 27-16 23rd Avenue.

Tickets are $10 and can be found at: qedastoria.com/collections/dave-hill.
