Through a partnership with The Queens Ledger Newspaper Group, Arby’s of Middle Village, Maspeth Federal Savings, Msgr. McClancy High School and Martin Luther High School, the Heroes Youth Basketball League has been run every year since 1990 in May and June at parks throughout Elmhurst, Maspeth and Middle Village.

The league typically has 10 to 12 team in each division, and game results are published each week in the Queens Ledger family of community newspapers and websites.

The quality of play in the league is outstanding. There is typically a good mix of CYO teams and AAU-level competition, although league officials do require rosters and check birth certificates, so the reputation for offering fair play with quality officiating is excellent.

Many of league alumni go on to play Division 1 college basketball, including one currently playing at St. John's and another at Fordham.

Heroes Basketball League guarantees 10 games (including play-offs), on weekdays only (Monday through Thursday starting at 5:45 p.m.) beginning in early May with playoffs beginning mid-June.

Championship games are at an indoor gym on Thursday, June 28. Schedules are posted at the Queens Ledger website, and emails are sent for scheduling updates and weather-related issues. There generally have 10 or 12 teams in each division.

Schedulers work with specific team schedules around conflict dates that the coach supplies. The first two weeks of the season are scheduled, then two weeks at a time until the playoffs. Some coaches request days they can not play, some earlier or later times (5:45 or 6:45 p.m. start), including doubleheaders if wanted.

Coaches must clearly indicate conflicts on the roster sheets when they hand it in by April 19, in time to order custom uniforms. Parent signatures and final rosters must be complete by the first game of the season.

We will place your sponsor’s name on uniforms if your team has one and it is handed in by April 19, including your $100 registration deposit. Teams get 14 shirts, and final rosters are due by May 4.

Roster are also available now at the Queens Ledger Office at 45-23 47 Street, 2nd floor, in Woodside.

Divisions, Rules & Eligible Ages

There are boys and girls divisions for 10 years and under, 12 & under boys, 12 & under, 14 & under, and 17 & under. Players may not turn the upper age in 2018, so someone who turns 13 on September 20 must play in the 14 & under division – not the 12 & under. These are basically CYO style age rules.

The games are played Mondays through Thursdays at either 5:45 or 6:45 p.m. primarily at Crowley Park (57th Ave. & 83 St.) in Elmhurst and Frontera Park in Maspeth. Games might also be played at Reiff Park or Maurice (Principe) Park in Maspeth, Dry Harbor Park (80th St & Myrtle Ave.) in Glendale, Juniper Valley Park in Middle Village or Bush Park in Woodside.

In June, some games will start at 7:45 p.m. as well. Teams only play on Fridays if rain has extended the season.

Costs & Registration

For an entire team in either the 10 or 12 & under is $500 (one referee). Costs for 14 and 17 & under is $600 (two referees). Cost includes all referee fees, and checks should be made out to Heroes.

For players who sign up without a team, cost for an individual is $75 in any division. There are typically teams who need players, but placement is not guaranteed. The fee will be returned if your child is not placed on a team. Sign up at the Queens Ledger office at 45-23 47 Street in Woodside.

Teams are encouraged to get sponsors. If they do, they supply the name of the sponsor by April 19, which will be printed on the back of the shirts. The name of the team in the news reports will be the sponsor name. Each player will receive a team shirt.
