Dear Editor,

The announcement that NYPC Commissioner Bill Bratton will be stepping down at the end of the month was surprising. Originally he said that he would remain until 2017.

He has had a long and distinguished career with the NYPD. Successor Chief James O'Neill has also had many years of dedicated service, and certainly will be an asset to our citizens as he takes over the running of the NYPD.

The NYPD is the finest police department in this country, whose officers put their lives on the line for us each and every day. All police officers across this country are to be commended for their service, loyalty and professionalism in doing their jobs.

Those certain few who violate guidelines and use force unnecessarily need to be relieved of their duties and, if necessary, prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

But they are a very small percentage of the police officers across the country who do their jobs professionally and with due diligence and respect.

Sincerely,

John Amato
