Ridgewood residents have a new grocery store option, as a Food Universe located half a block away from the M train celebrated its grand opening last week.

“We’re proud to welcome this Food Universe to our family of supermarkets because of storeowner Rafael Rodriguez’s dedication to serving the community’s grocery needs,” said Key Food Stores Cooperative Vice President of Business Development John Durante. “I’m confident that customers will greatly appreciate the hard work that Rodriguez has put into improving this location.”

The celebration brought a big crowd to the new store at 66-82 Fresh Pond Road, with loud music from a DJ that had some of its first customers dancing.

There were booths set up outside offering samples of Monster Energy Drink, Zico Coconut Water, Arizona Ice Tea and snacks from Boar’s Head, Frito Lay and others.

Inside, new patrons that signed up for loyalty cards had the chance to get Pabst Blue Ribbon hats or other fun items.

The supermarket was previously an Associated Supermarket, but decided to join the Key Food family and reopen as a Food Universe. Because of the new partnership, Rodriguez expanded to 5,000 square feet, which will allow him to offer a wider array of goods.

“For the past 15 years, I’ve served the community as an Associated Supermarket, but I’m very excited to join the Key Food family as a Food Universe,” said Rodriguez. “This transition has given us the opportunity to expand the store and create the ideal shopping experience, complete with improved quality and service.”

The newly renovated store offers a full deli counter featuring Boar’s Head cold cuts and colorful aisles stocked with necessities, customer favorites and a wide variety of produce, vegan and gluten-free items.

The store also features a massive craft beer section, offerings IPAs, stouts, pilsners and summer brews perfect to pair with hot dogs and hamburgers for an outdoor barbecue as the weather warms up.
