Vincent Arcuri is coming back to New York City to perform his one-man play and show old neighbors his journey of Becoming Butch.

The play is part of the 16th annual New York International Fringe Festival. Becoming Butch was written and is performed by Arcuri and directed in New York by Gary Riotto.

This one man show is a comedy that focuses on Arcuri's personal experiences of growing up in a conservative Irish and Italian household in Queens and moving to West Hollywood, California, where he lives an openly gay lifestyle.

There are some serious moments, but Arcuri makes it clear that humor can help individuals overcome hardships of growing up and feeling inadequate. “I was this weird kid growing up in Glendale,” he said, after explaining that he was more interested in batons than baseball.

The play showcases experiences he had combating the fear of not being manly enough. The audience will hear about when he went to a speech therapist in an attempt to make his voice deeper, and even spending time at the batting cage because he was tired of striking out at the family softball events.

Becoming Butch made its debut in March 2009, when it was preformed at the ACME Comedy Theater in Los Angeles for a sold-out run. It was was awarded an Outstanding Solo Performance by StageSceneLA. It was also featured in August 2010 when Arcuri performed Becoming Butch on the Celebrity Equinox cruise ship for Atlantis Events.

Arcuri spoke about the subject of the play which is his way of finding out how a man is supposed to act. He was so nervous to tell his parents he was gay that it took him 30 years, but when he did “They never let me think they loved me any less or treated me any differently,” Arcuri said.

Overall, Arcuri said he wants to help people understand that "becoming butch" is different for everyone. For him, it was telling his parents he was gay that made him feel the most butch he had in his life.
