Last Friday morning, the Forest Hills native and former state controller was sentenced to one to four years in prison for abusing his control of the state's massive pension fund.
Basically the scam went like this: you want Hevesi to invest, let's say, $250 million of the pension fund in your firm? Well, that can certainly be arranged, but what's in it for Mr. Hevesi and his cronies?
According to the New York Attorney General's office, Hevesi accepted nearly $1 million gifts from Elliott Broidy, a founder of Markstone Capital Partners, L.P., for giving his investment proposals preferential treatment. Those gifts included cash and trips to places like Israel, Italy, and California.
Although Hevesi joins several other New York City politicians behind bars, he does have one distinction: he became the first statewide elected official in history to be sentenced for crimes committed while in office.
Man, how did all of the others get away with it?!
