With a name change to Heroes Basketball League to commemorate our coaches, sponsors and supporters who sacrificed their lives in the 9/11 attacks at the World Trade Center, this youth basketball league is ready for the 2011 season.

The regular season runs May 9 through June 17, the playoffs June 20 through June 24, and the championships will be held on June 25 and 26 at Msgr. McClancy High School

There are divisions for 10 years old and under for boys, and for 10 year old and under girls; 12 and under boys and 12 and under girls; 14 and under boys and 14 and under girls; 17 and under boys and 17 and under girls.

We also have separate divisions in the Girls Divisions for both “travel” and CYO teams. If there are more than three girls on the team who are registered AAU players, the team should consider itself as part of the “Travel/AAU division.”

Individuals may play in more than one age division on two different teams. Children can play in the division as long as they do not reach the age of the next division before January 1, 2012. (Example: If a boy turns 11 years old on December 31, 2011, then he should play in 12 & under.)

The games are played Mondays through Thursdays at either 5:45 or 6:45 p.m. at Reiff Park, Maurice Park, and Frontera Park in Maspeth; Dry Harbor Park (80th Street and Myrtle Avenue) in Glendale; Juniper Valley Park in Middle Village; Bush Park in Woodside; and Crowley Park (57th Avenue and 83rd Street) in Elmhurst.

Referees & Game Summaries

The 10 and 12 year old divisions have one referee, the 14 and 17 have two referees. Game summaries are printed every week in the sports section and on the websites of the Queens Ledger Newspapers, which include the Queens Ledger, Greenpoint Star, Brooklyn Downtown Star, Glendale Register, LIC Journal, Forest Hills Times, Leader/Observer and Queens Examiner of Eastern Queens. Final scores as well as high scorers are included in the weekly reports.

Short Text Alert System

Text the word Heroes to #21321 for league info alerts.

The Heroes Youth Basketball League has been run every year since 1990 with a 10 game weekday-only season beginning in mid-May with playoffs beginning June 20. The championship games are at an indoor gym on June 25 or 26.

We have schedules on the web and we have short text alert programs for announcements or weather-related issues. We generally have 10 or 12 teams in each division and do not play on weekends.

One of the best things we do is work your schedule around conflict dates the coach supplies to us in advance. Some coaches give us dates or days they can not play, some give us times they wish to play, including doubleheaders if wanted. We are able to accommodate 95 percent of the conflicts given to us. Coaches must clearly indicate conflicts on the roster sheets.

We will place your sponsor’s name on uniforms we provide for each player, if your team has a sponsor.

In order to have fewer lopsided scores, when possible, we will schedule separate “divisions” in each age group with some crossover games. Teams which are made up of primarily the younger year in any age group will play teams their own age more often during the season. Playoffs seeds will be determined by season records. Knee coverings must be worn by players on the court in all divisions.

Coaches are required to attend the coaches meeting to pick up team shirts on Monday, May 2, at 7 p.m. at Arby's, 70th Street at Metropolitan Avenue in Middle Village. All schedules will be online at www.queensledger.com by 5/7/11.
