A Syrian child, who has been evacuated from the town of Daraya, poses upon her family's arrival at a government reception centre on August 27, 2016 in the government-held town of Hrajela in Western Ghouta, outside DamascusYazan, a four-year-old who has never known anything but deprivation, has finally discovered the joy of ice cream after being evacuated from the besieged town of Daraya near the capital of war-torn Syria. This week, under a deal between the government and rebel forces who controlled it, Daraya's thousands of civilians and rebel fighters were all evacuated from the town, devastated by constant bombardment. Yazan's family and many of the civilians were transferred to Hrajela, a village under government control located around 20 kilometres (12 miles) southeast of Daraya.

President Sergio Mattarella, Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and other leaders were among hundreds of mourners at a sports hall in Ascoli Piceno, capital of the central Marche region. The hall had been temporarily converted into a place of worship for the funeral of most of the people who perished in the villages of Arquata del Tronto and Pescara del Tronto in the region's mountainous interior.
