On the latest leg of a regional tour, Kerry was to hold discussions with his six counterparts from the Sunni-dominated Gulf Cooperation Council in a bid to allay fears about Shiite Iran after the nuclear deal. The GCC comprises Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Katie Ledecky celebrates after setting a new world record during the heats for the women's 1500m freestyle swimming event at the world championships in Kazan, on August 3, 2015Katie Ledecky of the United States admitted she was shocked after breaking her own 1,500m freestyle record in the heats of the world swimming championships in Kazan on Monday. "My coach told me to swim the first 900m easy, build over the next 300, then the final 300 was my choice and to be honest, it felt pretty easy," said Ledecky, who came within a second of her 400m record on Sunday. "I wasn’t kicking much and I think breaking the world record is testament to the hard work I have put in and the shape I am in right now.

A European Union flag flutters outside the Athens stock exchangeGreece's stock market suffered heavy losses on Monday, plunging nearly 23 percent at the open before recovering slightly, after a five-week shutdown brought on by fears the country was about to be dumped from the euro zone. One fund manager described it as "herd behavior" and said few people were buying. The main Athens stock index was down more than 18 percent in midday trading after an initial plunge that was larger than any one-day loss experienced on the bourse.
