Councilwoman Karen Koslowitz wanted to rush through the renaming before a Manhattan community board – where Ferraro spent the last years of her life – could rename a street after her in that borough. The way we see it, with the impending Rapture this weekend, we're not really sure if all of this wrangling actually makes a difference. (The bright side of the Rapture? We'll finally be able to find parking on Austin Street!)
But anyway, in honor of the proposed renaming, we dug through the archives for this photo of Mondale and Ferraro on a campaign stop outside Queens Borough Hall. There's all sorts of Queens elected officials up on that dais: on the far right we believe is a very, very young congressman Gary Ackerman, who to this day is tsill in office, and standing between Mondale and Ferraro is former Queens borough president Donald Manes, who famously killed himself after he was forced from office due to scandal. And is that a young Peter Vallone, Sr. all the way to the left? We're not entirely sure.
However, We are sure there are plenty of other famous Queens elected officials up there that we don't recognize – when this photo was taken Pol Position was still making fun of the foibles of the principal and teachers for our middle school newspaper, but maybe some of our readers who have been around a bit longer can help us out.
If you can help us identify some of the other people up on the riser, either email us (firstname.lastname@example.org) or hit us up on Twitter (@queensledger). Or if you are particularly tech-savvy, send us a text at 21321 with the keyword “polposition” and your best guess. We look forward to hearing from you!
