Members of the New York Police Department gather on the street before the 89th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in the Manhattan borough of New York.By Kylie Gumpert NEW YORK (Reuters) - Record crowds were expected to swarm Manhattan sidewalks and rooftops on Thursday to glimpse the marching bands, floats and massive balloons of Macy's annual Thanksgiving Day Parade, held under tight security two weeks after the attacks in Paris. New York officials said about 3.5 million spectators would turn out for the city's signature parade, in its 89th year, and they urged residents and visitors to carry on with holiday plans, saying there were no credible threats to the city. This is a way to push back on events around the world that are meant to intimidate," Police Commissioner William Bratton said at a press conference on Wednesday in Manhattan near where giant balloons of Snoopy and Hello Kitty were being readied for the event.

FILE - In this Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2015 file photo, National Turkey Federation Chairman Jihad Douglas watches at right as President Barack Obama pardons National Thanksgiving Turkey Abe, during a ceremony in the Rose Garden of the White House in Washington. Obama's pardoning of a turkey named "Abe" this Thanksgiving has led some Chinese to gloat at the Japanese prime minister's expense. As part of a peculiar annual tradition at the White House, Obama on Wednesday granted amnesty from the dinner table to two turkeys named "Honest" and "Abe" — from the nickname for President Abraham Lincoln. But a translation glitch in Chinese media replaced the character for single-syllable "Abe" with the surname of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (pronounced "Ah-bay"). Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday dismissed as "emotional" and "unfitting of politicians" suggestions that projects with Russia could be canceled in the wake of Turkey's downing of a Russian warplane near the Syrian border. Erdogan said the Russian jet was shot down on Tuesday in an "automatic reaction" in line with standing instructions given to the military. Turkey's military rules of engagement were a separate issue to disagreements with Russia over Syria policy, he said, and said that Ankara would continue to support moderate rebels in Syria and Turkmen fighters battling President Bashar al-Assad.
